Demolished Thoughts, brings together three artists, Reina Sugihara, Gabriel Hartley and Anne Ryan, who all explore the relationship between subject matter and the image making process in deeply engaging ways.
Reina Sugihara begins her paintings with an object or image which slowly and naturally gets abstracted as she paints, leading to an end result that oscillates from the dreamlike to the nightmarish in the repeatedly worked layers.
Gabriel Hartley's paintings hold scattered information across their surfaces with various forms and images coming in and out of focus. While the imagery can be perceived as recognisable objects and spaces, the same forms can quickly be seen as something entirely different as a result of the dense, ambiguous surfaces.
Anne Ryan's paintings are liberated from the confines of a frame, with figures merging together in free-standing constructions or bursting into fragments across walls. They are intensely coloured and densely layered with collage and paint. Ryan's ceramic works are glazed multiple times to create complex, rich surfaces which remix figures and animals from a wide variety of source materials in popular culture and art history.
