VILE DIVA - Ted Rogers
22 July – 10 September 2023
Ted Rogers is a multidisciplinary artist working predominantly with movement in Film, TV, Music Videos, Stage and Gallery contexts.
In their debut show at Quench gallery, Ted explores the extremities of movement through the neurodivergent and non binary lens; plowing their unwavering and infectious energy into ceramics, photography, drawings and sculpture.
Vile Diva explores Ted’s complex paradoxical love/hate relationship with Dance. As with many dancers, their passion for movement soon became an addictive and demanding figure in their life. Notoriously difficult and iconically hateful, dance school became a place of perfectionism, scrutiny and intense competition; a place that drove Ted beyond the brink both mentally and physically over and over again. Ted aligns this relationship with dance to their relationship with their sexuality. Through punched ceramic hand bags and sardonically narcissistic photography, Ted uses their vicious wit to convey how the gay scene can be a similarly destructive place for people who do not conform to such ideals.
There is however, a way to survive, an opportunity of villainy and an expulsion of rags that gives birth to a twisted, hardened and fabulous manifestation, The Vile Diva!
